Did you know?

Surprising facts:

  • For a long time we have been able to build houses that use almost no energy for heating. A super-insulated house built in Milton Keynes in 1986 only needed heating when outside temperatures went to -10°C, a very unusual occurrence in the UK.

  • Houses built to Passivhaus standards, which can be applied to many climates, use about 10% of the energy of a normal house and don’t need a heating system.

  • It is possible to retrofit many different types of existing UK houses to reduce energy use by 60% or more.

  • The US runs about 8 large power stations just to power stuff that is turned off, the so-called “vampire” power used by electrical items on standby.

  • 1.3 billion people in the world have no access to electricity.

  • Globally 2 million people a year die from air pollution.

  • Defending the Persian Gulf area costs the U.S. about $279 billion a year, about $66 per barrel of oil shipped through the Straits of Hormuz.

  • We use 475 exajoules of primary energy to produce 55 exajoules of useful energy services (heat, coolth, motion, light, sound) – an efficiency of about 11%.

  • The EU-27 countries spend about €500 billion a year importing energy. The Greek national debt is about €360 billion.
